How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World Discussion Guide

How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World is the third and final movie in this series. It is a fun, ‘growing up’ movie with the same stunning visuals as the previous movies. There is lots to discuss around the themes of love, family and relationships, and team work. Overall it is a great family movie however there are lots of battles and violence that younger kids may find scary.

Which of the characters did you like best? Why?

What feelings did you experience in this movie?

Discuss leadership. “They don’t have a leader, just a boy” was said of Hiccup. What does it mean to be a leader? Do you think he was a leader? Why or why not?

Discuss love. “There’s no greater gift than love” is a line in the movie. How was love displayed in this movie? What does it mean to be loved? To love?

Discuss how Gimmel felt about dragons. Why do you think he was so against humans and dragons living in peace together? What do you learn from him?

Other themes to consider: courage, teamwork, gender expectations/stereotyping, sacrifice.
