What if hearing from God was a superpower?

That’s the wonderfully fun starting point of Pete Greig’s How to Hear God: A Guide for Young Explorers. I love the way this book invites children to take seriously the possibility that God speaks and that they can learn to listen. Greig combines solid Bible teaching with inspiring stories from children, fun activities, cartoons, stories of heroes of the faith and practical ways of exploring what it might mean to hear God. It’s engaging without talking down to children and it gives them lots of different ways to think about listening to God.

The book is divided into two sections: Words and Whispers. The Words section explore some of the more familiar ways we hear God — through Jesus, the Bible, prayer and prophecy. The Whispers section explores ways we might encounter God’s voice through dreams, community and even the ordinary things around us. And I love the way the book brings all of this together in its final chapter titled, “The Word, The Whisper and The Way.”

This is a great book for kids. I highly recommend pastors, ministry leaders and parents read this book. It opens up a big theological question in a way that is accessible, imaginative and genuinely invitational. What if God is speaking? What might it look like to learn to listen?
