Gingerbread, Candies, and Conversations: A Family Advent Activity

Gingerbread, Candies, and Conversations: A Family Advent Activity

Building a gingerbread house is a fun holiday tradition! It’s also a wonderful way to pause, laugh, and reflect together as a family. As you decorate, use these conversation prompts to spark imagination, curiosity, and faith-filled reflection. See how a simple activity can open up big questions about Jesus, home, and what’s sweet and even sour in your life.

Build, Imagine, and Share

  • If you could live in a gingerbread house, what would it look like?

  • What candies would you use for furniture? Your fridge—veggies or more candy?

  • How will you make your windows?

  • Who would you invite to your gingerbread house? What would you share, and what might be hard to share?

  • Do you find it hard to wait or be patient—like waiting to eat the candies?

Talk About Jesus and Life

  • Where was Jesus born, and what do you think it was like?

  • Why do you think Jesus left heaven to live among us?

  • If you could peek in the stable where Jesus was born, what would you most want to see?

  • Jesus was born in humble surroundings—how does that make you feel about the Christmas story?

  • Jesus shared life with others—what is something He shares with you that you are thankful for?

  • What homes have you lived in? Where else might Jesus have lived as a child?

  • What’s sweet in your life to thank God for? What’s sour that you’d like to share with Him?

  • What would you like to ask Jesus if He returned today?

Closing Reflection

When your gingerbread house is finished, take a moment to look at it together. How does it remind you of the first Christmas? How do the small, unexpected joys—like decorating together—point to the bigger gift of Jesus? Advent invites us to notice God’s presence in both the sweetness and the shadows of life.
